Story:

Set in the pre-Independence era, the story follows Analeesan, also known as Issa and Captain Miller (Dhanush). Initially siding with the British, he believes they offer better opportunities than Indian kings. His perspective changes during a mission when he’s asked to fire at protesting Indians. This prompts him to embrace his rechristened identity, Captain Miller, and join the revolutionaries in his village. However, Captain Miller’s complex character adds a twist, making it unclear whether he is with or against the cause.

Captain Miller Movie Review: Script Analysis

A pressing question arises after “Katappa ne Baahubali ko kyon maara?”: Why do South Indian filmmakers have a penchant for hitting the 3-hour mark? While acknowledging that filmmakers are world-builders, there’s a concern about living in a world that takes too much time to unfold basic elements. Despite the potential for boredom, Arun Matheswaran has created an intriguing world. Unable to depict real-life Tamil Eelam liberation struggles due to controversy, he explores a narrative questioning the bravery of a traitor turned revolutionary.

Siddhartha Nuni’s cinematography doesn’t fully match the visionary direction and screenplay by Arun Matheswaran (with Madhan Karky). Similar to Sonchiriya, the ultra-realistic setup exudes rawness, while the village, akin to Kantara, becomes a character itself, establishing a deep connection through cultural exploration.

Captain Miller Movie Review: Star Performance

Dhanush is the perfect fit for the role of Captain Miller, performing as if the character was tailor-made for him. Despite occasional dips in the character arc graph due to pacing issues, Dhanush compensates with a heartfelt performance.

Shiva Rajkumar’s cameo, while not as impactful as Jailer’s, provides enough substance to leave an impression. Priyanka Arul Mohan and Nivedhithaa Sathish shine on screen with their presence, although they lack memorable scenes that would make them stand out.

Captain Miller Movie Review: Direction, Music

Arun Matheswaran is carving a niche for himself with films known for their unique presentation. After notable attempts in Rocky and Saani Kaayidham, he returns with Captain Miller, exploring a different world while maintaining his vision of breaking new ground. While there may be other films with a similar template, Captain Miller feels richer and visually more polished.

G. V. Prakash Kumar’s omnipresent and heavy-on-the-beat background score significantly contributes to the film’s impact. He skillfully utilizes the ‘damru’ in the background, enhancing the intrigue in crucial sequences. The aura of “Killer Killer” is magnificent, although the Hindi lyrics fall short of doing justice to it.
